1760 1st January. Married CATHERINE BURRIDGE at Syderstone. William Green of Bighton.

1791 1st March. Burial of wife Catherine in Syderstone churchyard.

1792 6th November. Married widow Susanna Rumbolds at Syderstone.

1811 24th May. Burial of William Green in Syderstone churchyard.

1825 6th March. Burial of widow Susanna in Syderstone churchyard.

WILLIAM GREEN 1762 Baptised on the 16th of October at Syderstone.

1785 22nd January. Married Elizabeth Goulty at Houghton St. Giles.

Children: Robert Green 1785, Jane Green 1788, Ann Green 1791, John Green 1793, Elizabeth Green 1793, Elizabeth Green 1795, Catherine Green 1804, Mahala Green 1806.

MARY GREEN 1765 Baptised on the 12th of February at Syderstone.

JANE GREEN 1767 Baptised on the 17th of April at Syderstone.

1788 14th October. Married Thomas Wicks in Syderstone.

Children: Robert Wicks 1789, Susan Wicks 1790, Mary Wicks 1792, Edmund Wicks 1798, John Wicks 1804, Alice Wicks 1808.

ROBERT GREEN 1773 Baptised on the 15th of July at Syderstone.

THERE IS FURTHER RESEARCH TO DO - William Green was of Bighton at the time of his marriage. This was likely to have been Beighton. There are Greens in the Beighton registers at the right time period but no William.

The following are the children of Robert Green and his wife Susanna of Beighton: Robert bap. 1726/27, John bap. 1728/29 and bur. 1728/29, Elizabeth bap. 1730 and bur. 1731, Susanna bap. 1732, bap. John bap. 1733. John and Mary Green baptised a son John in 1727.

Jonathan Green married Sarah Ellis in Beighton in 1733/1734. No baptisms found. but Jonathan and Sarah buried several infants: Sarah in 1742, Ellis (son) in 1742, Elizabeth in 1743/44, Jonathan 1744, Elizabeth 1744/1745, Jonathan 1747 and possibly a Robert 1749, an Ellis (son) 1750 and an Elizabeth 1752. Jonathan Green, senior, was buried in 1790 aged 78 years and his wife Sarah in 1783 in Beighton.

Of the children of William and Catherine Green above Jane is from Catherine's side of the family leaving the forenames of John, Mary and Robert that could have come from the Green side.

In year 1806 there was a will proved for Patience Green, widow. Her son John Green and daughter Mary Green were the executors and John Ellis and William Cole the witnesses. She gives one hundred pounds to her grandson, John Green (under 21), the son of her late son Jonathan and the same to Sarah and Robert Green, also children of the late Jonathan. Another one hundred pounds was given to granddaughter, Mary Rachel Green (under 21), daughter of John, and the same to Harriet another daughter of John. To Mary Green daughter of Patience "All and singular my household stuff furniture farming stock corn implements of husbandry monies and securities for money and all other my goods chattels and personal estate whatsoever .." The will was written in 1805. No burial found for Patience Green at Beighton. There was a John and his wife Patience Green having children in Hassingham in the 1760/70s. John Green and Mary Green were two of their children.

No other Beighton wills for the surname have been found. A widow Mary Green of Buckenham was buried in Beighton in 1780 aged 95 years and a Thomas Green was buried there in 1776.

GREEN - According to a surname project based at the University College in London the surname of Green started of as an English nickname. It has also been suggested elsewhere that it was a name given to someone who lived in the centre of a settlement adjoining the village green. As many villages had some sort of green area it might explain why the name is so much in use. This surname was accounted more often in central and eastern England and less often in the south-west, the south-east and the north of England.
